A PR Pro on a Social Media Diet: Finding Purpose in the Chaos

Five tips for a healthy social media diet infographic

As a PR professional, I live and breathe communication. But recently, I did something that might seem counterintuitive—I went on a social media diet. And what I found was eye-opening: A PR pro without social media is like a swimmer without water, a runner without oxygen.

That being said, social media is filled with a lot of "fat"—empty calories that drain time, energy, and creativity without providing real value. So, how do we make social media more purposeful and intentional? Here are five insights I’ve gained from my social media reset:

1. It's Okay to Go Offline or Go Quiet

Social media often makes us feel like we must always be "on." But taking a break—whether for a day, a week, or longer—can provide clarity and a fresh perspective. You don’t owe anyone constant updates. Your account, your rules.

2. Social Media Shouldn't Deplete You

If being online feels exhausting, something needs to change. Social media should be a tool that supports your goals, not something that drains your energy. If it’s not adding value to your life or career, it may be time to reassess how you use it.

3. Pick One or Two Platforms to Focus On

Not all platforms are created equal, and trying to be everywhere can be overwhelming. Choose the one or two that best align with your goals—whether for networking, industry insights, or personal enjoyment—and let go of the rest.

4. Choose Your Network Wisely

The people and accounts you follow shape your experience. Be intentional about who you connect with and consume content from. Follow individuals and brands that inspire, educate, and align with your values.

5. Be Intentional About How You Engage

Engagement should be meaningful. Rather than mindlessly scrolling, set an intention for your time on social media. Whether it’s networking, learning, or sharing insights, make every interaction purposeful.

Social media is a powerful tool, but like any tool, it’s only as useful as the way we wield it. By being more intentional about how we use it, we can create a more fulfilling and productive digital experience—one that aligns with our professional and personal goals.
